With summer upon us, many folks are gearing up to throw nighttime backyard parties. And how can a backyard party would be complete without a fire pit? If you’re looking to invest in one of these outdoor marvels and be the popular guy in the neighborhood, you’ll have to first consider a few things. First, you want to figure out of course how big of a pit you want. There are many different variations on the type and size of fire pits, so take some time and determine the best size to fit your needs. If you have a big yard or patio, you will of course want a larger fireplace. And likewise, if you have a small yard, then you”ll want a smaller fire pit…doesn’t take a genius to figure that one out!
A popular fire pit design is what’s known as the chiminea. This is generally for smaller fires, and also has the convenience of being portable. Most chimineas are constructed with terra cotta, though many are also finished with copper or steel. If you’re using a chiminea on a patio made of wood, a fire mat is a must have, along with a screen to protect against sparks.
If you’re wanting to save money with your outdoor fireplace, you will probably want to go with a wood burning variety. They come in a range of sizes, from a small collapsible unit, to a large permanent concrete fixture. Wood fire pits are cheap to build and use, though you will want to check for any burning regulations in your area to be on the safe side and make sure you don’t break any zoning rules.
Natural gas or propane fire pits are a good choice if you don’t want so much of a mess in your fireplace. No smoke or ash is involved, so the air will definitely be much cleaner in your yard with this type of fireplace. Many propane models are small and portable, which make them an excellent choice if you would like to have one on your next camping trip or tailgate party.
