Build Your Own Outdoor Wood Burning Fireplace

Do you enjoy having friends and family over to hang out in your backyard? Do you miss those good times in the spring and fall when it is just a bit too chilly to spend the evening outdoors? By building an outdoor wood burning fireplace you can bring all the warmth and comfort of summer to any evening gathering. Building an outdoor fireplace is a lot easier than you might think. There are just a few tips you should follow when doing so.

First, make sure that the location you select is far enough away from your house as well as any trees in your yard. While the area will be somewhat protected by design, you do not want to take any chances of a gust of wind causing a fire by spreading ash.

So settle on your location and remove any brush and grass in the area. Smooth out the ground to prepare the surface for building. You will start by laying your pavers in the design you have chosen. This will serve as the foundation for the outdoor fireplace. Next you should pick up a 55 gallon drum or something similar for the fire. You can find a used one at a salvage yard if you are trying not to spend any additional money. If you go with a used or recycled option, make sure that the item has been cleaned thoroughly so that any toxic materials are removed.

Prefabricated Outdoor Fireplaces – Get Yours in Time For Summer

When most people think of fireplaces, they think of cozying up on a winter’s night in their living room. Well it’s time to move the fireplace outdoors for fun summer nights with a prefabricated outdoor fireplace. You can build one yourself, but a prefab model offers a lot of benefits over the alternatives and are surprisingly affordable.

Not only are they affordable, prefabs come in a variety of styles and are very efficient to operate. Whether you are looking for a single or multi-faced design, a solid brick structure or a more modern steel structure, there are numerous designs available to choose from. And after you’ve decided on brick or metal, you can choose the type of brick or the type of metal, ranging from stainless steel, cast iron, brass, nickel and much more. You also have the freedom to choose fuel source – either good old-fashioned wood, or electric, or gas. The options are nearly endless!

Perhaps you already know where you want to put your fireplace, but if you don’t, prefabricated outdoor fireplaces offer the versatility to be installed nearly anywhere. Put it poolside, as a centerpiece of your garden, in your courtyard, or on your patio. A lot of designs will have a glass structure so the fire can be easily seen and so heat is dispersed efficiently. Outdoor gas fireplaces allow for cleanliness and ease of flame control, though some states have regulations regarding gas use. More traditional wood burning types give you the feel of being in the great outdoors and are great for making snores on those warm summer nights.

Outdoor Fireplace Grill Safety Tips

Owning an outdoor fireplace grill provides an excellent way to cook outdoors for your family and friends. Although cooking on an outdoor grill is relatively simple, here are some outdoor fireplace grill safety tips you can follow which will make the experience a lot more fun. There is nothing like setting your backyard alight to ruin a good evening.

The following outdoor fireplace grill safety tips may seem like commonsense, but there is one thing I have learned about commonsense is that it is not very common. It’s a better option to follow these tips than risk injury or losing your property

1. Find a Secure Location for Your Fireplace

The best place to locate your outdoor fireplace grill is on a level space away from you house or other buildings. For maximum protection the surface that your fireplace is located upon should be fireproof. Look for a wide and clear open space away from combustible objects such as plants, trees, overhanging branches, vines or buildings. An ideal location would be on a concrete pad.

2. Using Excellerants To Light Your Fire Is A No No

Using excellerants such as petrol or kerosene to light your fire is extremely stupid as they can be very unpredicable in the way they behave. Preparation is the key here. Make sure you have a good supply of dry newspaper or kindling or a firelighter block.

3. Always Clean Your Cooking Surface

It’s best practice to remove all debris from your cooking surface when you’ve finished using it. This is not only more hygienic, keeping pests at bay, it will also ensure your outdoor fireplace grill is free from grease and debris the next time you use it. Following this procedure will save you running the risk of having your outdoor grill becoming a fire hazard.

4. Leaving Your Fire Unattended Is Risky

You have no doubt heard you shouldn’t leave a fire unattended. Your outdoor fireplace grill is no different. Never be complacent with any burning material around even if you are doing something else or having a conversation with someone. Watch out for unexpected winds or any other event could cause your fire to spread. As an additional, precaution always have a fire extinguisher or fire blanket handy when you are cooking on your grill.

5. Keep Your Children Away

Just like a moth is attracted to light so to are children attracted to fire and flames. They seem to be drawn to it. Teaching safety around your outdoor fireplace grill to your children is paramont to their safety and yours as they can distract you from the task at hand. For this reason it is a good idea to have someone else to keep an eye on the kids when you are doing the cooking.

When it comes to the safety of your property, family, friends and yourself there is nothing wrong with being a little precautious.

Things to Consider When Building An Outdoor Fireplace

Setting up an outdoor fireplace isn’t as easy putting up a fence or a portable basketball unit in your backyard. When building a fireplace, there are a number of things you have to take into consideration to ensure that your project doesn’t get derailed. Here are some things that you should look into.

Before building your outdoor fireplace, one of the most important things you have to ensure is that you’re not breaking any ordinances in your area. Some places have certain rules and codes when it comes to building a fireplace in your home. So if you don’t want your project to be delayed or placed on hold, be sure to know the rules first. After all, the last thing you want is to be paid a visit by your friendly neighborhood inspector.

The second thing you have to consider is your fireplace’s location. Although it will be a part of your house, given that it’s going to involve the use of fire, you’d want to keep it a bit far from your home. The last thing you’d want is for your fireplace to burn down your house. Also, make sure that it’s also far from trees, other houses, pipes, and electrical wirings.

The last thing you would want to look into is the overall design. If you just want to install one to make your home stylish, you can simply stick the traditional design of having a firebox and a chimney. If you’re planning on using it for other purposes such as heating or cooking, just make sure you’ve got all the right components to ensure that the fireplace functions the way you want it.

Remember, preparation and careful planning is key to building that dream outdoor fireplace of yours. By making sure that you’ve got everything, setting up your fireplace won’t be that much of a hassle for everyone involved.

Consider an Outdoor Fireplace For Your Family

The current trend for homes today is to install any of a range of available outdoor fireplaces in the backyard, patio, or deck. This trend adds value to your entertainment space by allowing your family access to the warmth and atmosphere of an outdoor fire all year round.

Chimineas are a popular choice in outdoor fireplaces because of the options it offers. This fireplace is usually manufactured from cast iron, other metals or sometimes even ceramic and stands on its own. You can choose the size you need to best fit your outdoor recreation area. The reason a lot of people go with this type of outdoor fireplace is the flexibility of sizes available. If you only have restricted space such as a patio, you could still fit a Chiminea there. There are a range of designs also available, such as a clean simple design, or something more elaborate and fancy. It really comes down to personal choice, but either way this is a great outdoor fireplace.

A Chiminea keeps the fire completely contained and closed off, which is another advantage in its favor. It takes away the risk of stray sparks or ash escaping from the flames because the smoke is forced through the chimney. You can still roast chestnuts over the open flame, but it is a much safer option because the risk of other fires being sparked off from the ash are minimized with this design.

Other families are actually opting for the more traditional design of outdoor fireplaces. It has the same design and face as a fireplace in the house, but is installed on the patio or deck. The materials chosen are usually to complement the overall atmosphere of nature and the outdoors, so are likely to be stone or brick. This will certainly help enclose the fire, yet won’t hamper the heat it gives off and will also give you that intimate atmosphere.

Another option you can have installed in your patio is a fire pit. Fire pits need to be linked up to a gas line, and they give you complete control over temperature and are super easy to ignite. The fire pit is completely open and gives the same atmosphere as a campfire. It is a popular choice by many but does carry risks especially if you have children around as they can easily touch the flames and sparks can also be carried by the wind and start rogue fires. However, you can buy a fire screen to enclose the fire pit and provide better safety options.

Installing an outdoor fireplace is becoming an increasingly popular fashion. People love the atmosphere a fire provides, as both a source of heat and also a place to relax and chill out. And you don’t have to make the design decisions alone because there are professionals who can assist you in choosing the best design and most appropriate fit of outdoor fireplace for your personal needs. You can find help through the Internet or at your local supplier.

Outdoor Fireplace Kits Make Beautiful Outdoor Fireplaces

If you’ve ever spent the evening at a gathering on someone’s nicely landscaped patio around the ambient glow of an outdoor fireplace it may have made you crave one of your own. But the idea of constructing an outdoor fireplace may seem a bit overwhelming when you think about the construction, the masonry and brick or stone work involved for a nice one. With the help of outdoor fireplace kits this doesn’t have to be the case.

Outdoor fireplace kits make the construction, including both labor and materials, easier and in most cases more affordable. These kits come with step by step instructions and many also come with videos so you can watch exactly how it’s done. They almost make it look like putting a piece of furniture together, fit tab A into slot B.

Of course you’re working with much bigger and heavier materials, but these kits are perfect for the person who loves to tackle projects themselves. They are even good if you want to hire someone else to put it together because they will cut down significantly on the cost of labor with all the pre-cut pieces.

The other nice thing about outdoor fireplace kits is that you can modify the exterior surface to your own liking by finishing it in stucco, brick or stone. This is the area where you can get creative and add your own touch to it. You can use various types of stone or brick on the outside to create the look you want whether you’re going for natural and earthy, sophisticated, Southwest or a rustic look. You can model it after one you’ve seen or create your own design.

Patio fireplaces have become increasingly popular and it’s easy to understand why. They create a beautiful atmosphere in your own backyard while they also extend the period of time you can spend outside. When the evenings start to get too chilly to be comfortable outside you can still go out and enjoy your patio when you have an outdoor fireplace. Even when it’s warm outside it will help keep the bugs away. It creates a great environment for entertaining as well.

Outdoor Fireplace Designs – What You Need To Know

Outdoor fireplace design is quickly growing in popularity among homeowners in the U.S. Having an outside fire burning in your backyard while entertaining friends and family is life at its best. But, what should you be aware of with any outdoor fireplace design before installing one? Here’s a quick look. Basically, an outdoor fireplace is the same as an indoor fireplace with the exception of a damper.

Your fireplace design can include standard bricks to cultured stones. Cultured stone differs from natural stone in that it is a cast stone, which makes it easier to work with.

A chimney is also used with outdoor design just as it is inside. The difference here is that you can use anything from a standard brick chimney to Mexican style chimney pots and many other designs as well.

Fireplace construction can be done with terra cotta, aluminum or cast iron in addition to brick. You can really get creative with any outdoor fireplace design.

Your outdoor fireplace can also include items such as a hearth, mantel and shelves if you would like. A stone mantel can be most attractive and a real conversation piece.

Outdoor Fireplace – Which Kind Works For You?

An outdoor gas fireplace is the perfect outdoor accessory. It’s attractive, with its sleek profile and heat efficiency. You can have all of the warmth and allure of an outdoor campfire, without the space requirements of the much more cumbersome masonry wood-burning outdoor fireplace.

There are fewer sparks and less smoke with an outdoor gas fireplace than with a conventional wood burning outdoor fireplace as well. It’s really a hassle-free way to enjoy the beauty of a flame while you are relaxing in your yard.

There are two major types of outdoor gas fireplace. Either is durable and easy to run, but there are a few differences. There is the direct-vent version, which is vented to the exterior through the wall. There’s also the ventless outdoor gas fireplace, which requires no venting. If you want to go with gas for your outdoor fireplace but already have a wood-burning unit, you can convert to gas with the help of gas inserts.

Most outdoor gas fireplaces burn either propane or natural gas. If you go with propane, you’ll need a standard propane tank. The natural gas version is a cleaner burning fire, and produces less carbon monoxide, particle emissions, and pollutants.

In either model, there will be a burner that heats your fireplace. A stainless steel burner is best because of how quickly it heats up. For appearance most also use weather resistant fiber or ceramic logs to make it look like a log is burning.

You can adjust the flow of gas into the combustion chamber via a knob. There’s a safety valve control available, this is recommended. You can even get a model with a push button ignition. You can also get variable speed fans, or glass faces for your fireplace.

The majority of these models have pull handles and wheels and are portable. You can even find some models that have cooking options such as barbecue grills.

One thing to remember is that since you will be using your outdoor fireplace out by the pool or patio or in your backyard, it has to stand up to the weather. Look for models that are made from durable cast iron, or better yet stainless steel or aluminum alloy.

Fireplace Doors Provide a Nice Look

There are many different types of fireplaces that you can purchase and they all are designed to function in a variety of different ways. Some people like fireplace doors while others don’t. Some are made of glass and others are made of brick or stone. There are so many different combination’s of options to choose from that it can be difficult to figure out where to get started if you’re new to this entire process. People that have purchased a fireplace before have an idea of what is involved and it is much easier for them to go through the steps of picking out the different parts to make a cohesive package.

One key part to this is the fireplace door. In many cases having a nice high-quality fireplace door can make all the difference in the world with how your fireplace functions. If you want it to function at its most optimal setting then you should spend a little extra money within your budget on purchasing a good-quality door that can allow your fireplace to achieve its potential. The door has to keep the heat from your house from escaping and also helps prevent the cold air from outside coming in through your chimney. It also can work to help keep your fire burning as efficiently as possible which is important if you are actually using your firebox to provide heat for your home.

Another reason why these are important is because without one it can be dangerous for your home as well as for guests in your home to be around the fire. If you have carpeting or something that can catch on fire easily that is close to the fire then it’s easy for flames, ashes, sparks, and things of that nature to fly out of the fire and land on the things around the ground. The fireplace door helps to protect this from occurring. Sometimes it can be a good idea to set up an outdoor fireplace to entertain guests during the cold months of the year. An outdoor fireplace kit can be the perfect solution to get one of these set up in your backyard.

Simple Outdoor Fireplace Designs For Any Budget

Outdoor living is preferred by many families today. This is evident in the home extensions created by homeowners who believe that outdoor space is as vital as their indoor living area.

A common fixture in most outdoor space is the fireplace. A home with a nice backyard and situated in a picturesque environment, for instance, can very well accommodate an outdoor fireplace. This can be installed in a garden patio or deck which is a popular choice for homeowners who love outdoor living.
Outdoor fireplace designs come in a wide range of styles these days. It’s just a matter of choosing the size and the right materials that suit the preferred overall theme of the outdoor space and that’s fit for the homeowner’s budget.

In terms of materials to use, an important consideration is location. Homeowners need to decide first and foremost whether their fireplace will be situated in an open area and exposed to all types of weather or will be situated in a covered space such as a terrace just adjacent to the main house.

A stone outdoor fireplace encourages a warm and cozy ambiance to any home. Being a structure that exudes strength owing to the material used, it is also a safe option. Stones are fire and weather resistant and families can therefore feel safe when building their fire here. Maintenance is not much of a problem as well for this type of outdoor fireplace design.

The Mexican style Chimenea with its simple fireplace design is also ideal for outdoor use. This is another permanent structure similar to the stone fireplace but can be made from various materials such as clay, cast iron and aluminum. A major advantage of this is its ease in creating fire and providing heat.

A simpler and more flexible outdoor fireplace design is the fire pit. This type is very ideal for small spaces and for homeowners who do not want to have a permanent fireplace outside their homes. Common materials used for this are stones, bricks and metal. And other than the warmth it provides to families, an open fire pit can also be used for cooking barbecues during special gatherings.

If you wish to use the metal fireplace type, it’s highly recommended that you place it under a covered area. Metals are prone to corrosion when exposed to varying weather conditions in an open space so keep this in mind.

When planning your outdoor fireplace design, homeowners also need to weigh the pros and cons of the different types of fuel available. Many love to use wood due to the crackling sounds it makes when it’s burning thereby achieving a cozy and intimate ambiance. The downside is that it leaves ashes and requires cleaning after every use.

For the environment conscious people, a gas outdoor fireplace is suitable as it does not require much maintenance. And with no logs to chop, it is very easy to use.

Planning is vital when deciding on an outdoor fireplace design fit for your home. When you are able to consider the factors outlined, then you’re on your way to achieving your desired style.
