Backyard Camping Trip

Are your kids begging you to take them camping, but you just can’t find the time to take them on a camping trip? Or would you like to introduce your kids to the fun of camping for the first time, but aren’t sure if they will enjoy it, or might get scared? Either way, camping out in your backyard will be a fun way to spend the evening and night with your kids.

Get the kids involved in setting up camp in your backyard. Have them help you set up the tent. Put them in charge of getting their sleeping bags, flashlights and anything else they may need into the tent. If it’s an option for you, you may even want to make a campfire in your backyard. Check with your fire department before hand if this is an option in your area. If not, just dig out the charcoal or gas grill. Grill some hotdogs and make some foil backed potatoes for dinner, and of course you’ll need some s’mores for desert. If you are roasting the marshmallows over your grill, put some aluminum foil over the grate to keep the melting marshmallow from dripping onto your grill.

Don’t have a tent, or even a backyard for that matter? That’s no reason not to camp out. Just spread out your sleeping bags, or even just some blanket in the living room. Turn off the TV, radio and video games. If you have a fireplace, build a fire. Otherwise, order some pizza and pop some popcorn and you can even make s’mores in the microwave.

No matter where you decide to have your close to home camping trip, take some time to sit together and talk. Telling stories, whether a campfire is involved or not, is always fun. Your kids’ imagination in creating new stories may surprise you. Don’t forget to tell some handed down family tales.

A Patio Fire Pit is a Great Option For Your Backyard

There are several exciting ways to enjoy the outdoors and have some fun with family and friends even in the cold winter season. One of which is to sit by the patio fire pit. A patio fire pit turns any outdoor patio area into a cozy warm place to gather. This type of pit can be easily installed so you can start enjoying its benefits that bring closer bond to family and friends.

Placing a outdoor fireplace on your patio or near your home garden creates a good ambiance for a romantic moment with your loved one or a great party with family and friends.

In warmer climates, it makes a lot of sense to make use of the space around your house as living space like the porch area, your backyard, or patio. Even in some countries with four seasons, people will always find ways to have fun and group activities outside the house. Simply hanging around outside with family and friends, dining, or having a party seems to look enjoyable if done outside. A patio fire pit is the best and inexpensive way to create greater comfort and entertainment during the cold winter or even in the summer.

The most common design of a fire pit is circular. This shape resembles the traditional campfire used to gather family and friends around. There are several available styles and designs to suit your taste. It also comes in various materials such as copper, steel, clay, stone, and bricks. If you don’t like to use wood for burning, you can opt for natural gas or propane.

You can also purchase an outdoor fireplace that is portable. This is great for having the option to move it around wherever it is needed. Several people would prefer to buy portable fire pits while others opt for permanent fixture. If should you choose a permanent design, you might as well consider a design that you can do yourself. It simply involves digging a hole in the ground and piles some bricks around it. If you want to have a pit for your patio, this do it yourself design is not applicable, so you have to choose a ready made one.

Having a patio fire pit also requires safety precautionary measures. Since you will be dealing with open flame, several certain designs employ a protective screen that prevents sparks that may be considered as fire hazard. It is also important to consider the proper location in relation to your house and other structures that are flammable.

Create Your Own Backyard Retreat

Looking to spice up your outdoor living space for the upcoming fall season? There’s no better way to increase character, charm and individuality to an outdoor area than by adding some of the season’s hottest garden structures like pergolas, garden arbors, outdoor columns, raised accent beds and, of course, fire pits. The problem lies in choosing just which garden design is best for you.

Whether you’re a homeowner designing your own backyard oasis or a seasoned outdoor architect, thanks to the never-ending selection of outdoor structures, the process of choosing the best outdoor living design to compliment a home and the needs of a family, can be a bit overwhelming.

Pergolas
If parties for quaint gatherings are a regular occurrence in your family’s backyard, then the addition of a pergola to your outdoor living area might be just perfect. These garden structures really do offer the best of both worlds. They exude rural charm, yet add a modern, chic feel to any backyard design.

Pergolas are great for offering reprieve from the intense summer and fall sun. Add a few never-out-of-style Cape Cod Adirondack Chairs under your white fiberglass pergola perched upon a stone fixture, and you’ve got yourself a picture-perfect backyard gathering spot. An even bigger selling point, some companies have created maintenance-free pergola designs. They’re stylish, practical and require no maintenance. You just can’t beat it.

Garden Arbors

Garden arbors are striking additions to any outdoor living area. Garden arbors come in a number of different designs such as arch, gothic and gable and are made from various materials like copper, iron, fiberglass, wood, vinyl, plastic and metal. There truly is something for everyone, no matter what backyard style you want to establish.

Add your own touch of personality and charm by allowing your favorite flowers or ivy to grow around a wooden or fiberglass arbor. It creates a picturesque grand entrance to any outdoor living space.

Outdoor Columns

Wanting to add incredible class and character to your property? Exquisite outdoor columns made of cast stone are definitely the way to go. They’re both easy to install and incredibly durable. Whether it’s in the form of driveway columns, like those below, or yard columns, cast stone products are top of the line in outdoor architecture.
Add a cast iron, gothic-style gate and fine trimmed shrubbery, and you’ve created a regal entrance to any property.

Raised Accent and Garden Beds

For those with a green thumb who are interested in finding the perfect spot to showcase their flower-growing prowess, raised accent beds are a great addition to any gardener’s backyard. They’re the ideal way to display flowers and create gorgeous gardens and fountains.

And for people who love growing their own, healthy veggies right at home, mix in a few raised garden beds. Gardens have a tendency to get a bit out of control, which is why raised garden beds are ideal. They help to contain veggies and enable a large garden to grow in a small area. Plus, the compact space of a raised garden bed makes upkeep and maintenance much easier.

Red Cedar beds are a great choice. They’re not only durable and attractive, but the cedar actually fights off rotting and insects.

But if cedar isn’t what you want, there are a number of maintenance-free, cast stone raised accent beds that add a more refined and dramatic look. The mixture of flowing greens and vibrant flowers is a must-have for any fall backyard landscape.

Outdoor Fire Pits

Just because cool temperatures are quickly approaching doesn’t mean it’s time to pack up the backyard for the season. In fact, the fun is just beginning.

There’s no better way to fend off those end-of-summer blues than by snuggling up around an outdoor fireplace. Honestly, on those chilly nights, what’s more cozy than gathering around a backyard fire pit and roasting marshmallows?

A Backyard Sanctuary

Whether it’s a combination of a charming garden pergola and the exquisiteness of cast stone columns, or the coupling of an adorable garden arbor and a raised accent bed, the end result can be spectacular. So spectacular in fact, one won’t ever want to leave the confines of their comfy backyard again. Who needs a vacation this fall, when there’s a retreat just steps from your back door?

Chimineas – Fire Pits And Fireplaces Aren’t The Only Outdoor Heating Pieces

So you love to hang out on the patio or in the backyard in the evenings, but find that the cooling weather has forced you to go indoors earlier. There is a supremely easy fix for this problem–outdoor heating. When it comes to outdoor heating you may immediately think of fire pits, heat lamps, or outdoor fireplaces, but another really great option is the chiminea.

While fire pits and other outdoor heating pieces are great options, they are certainly not your only choice. Chimineas offer many perks to homeowners and should definitely be considered when people are researching outdoor heating options.

Chimineas offer just as much diversity as fire pits when it comes to looks. They come in many different sizes and designs, and are made of many different types of materials. They can be composed of clay or any variety of metal including aluminum, sheet metal, cast iron, copper, stainless steel, and more.

Air Drafting Process
One great perk to having a chiminea is that they have effective air drafting systems. They are single-mouthed fireplaces with chimneys that. They are designed to bring air in and send smoke away from guests. They are also enclosed which makes them extremely safe structures to have on patios and in backyards.

Clay Chimineas
When dealing with chimineas that are made of clay, there are a few things that you must remember. First, the clay will “cure” and turn to a different color after being used a few times. This is part of the aging process and the color change is something that many people find desirable.

Second, clay is prone to cracking. You must remember that while clay is a durable material it is sensitive to extreme temperature changes and to extreme cold or hot temperatures period. It must also be kept in a dry place. It is highly recommended that you invest in a waterproof cover of some kind if you decide to buy a clay chiminea.

Third, you should make sure to fill your chiminea with gravel, sand, or rocks to keep the fire from directly touching the clay. Also, the first time you use your chiminea you must only start a small fire.

Metal Chimineas
These need much less babying but there are certain types of metals that are better than others. This is also represented in the way these pieces are priced. Some people consider metal chimineas to be a better choice than clay, but depending on the metal you can still get damage like warping, rusting, and cracking. Two of the top choices are copper and cast aluminum (not sheet aluminum!). Sheet metal should be avoided even if you are looking for a chiminea that will last for a while. Cast iron is a popular choice as well but is can leave stains on the surface of your patio so be careful where you place it.

Final Note
I wouldn’t agree that the phrase “the bigger the better” is true with everything. However, with chimineas it tends to hold true. Bigger and thicker chimineas are known to be more durable.

Depending on your style, an outdoor fire pit might be preferable, but it is important to keep your options open and know what is available to you when it comes to outdoor heating. Fire pits and fireplaces aren’t the only kids on the block.

How to Build an Outdoor Fireplace Without Eating Up an Entire Weekend

An outdoor fireplace is a great addition to any backyard. It serves as an accent piece for family time or socializing with friends on a brisk fall evening.

Here we’re going to show you how to put in a simple outdoor fireplace in less than a weekend. Today we’ll concentrate on one particular type of outdoor fireplace, more commonly known as a fire pit.

This type of fireplace can be built with only a few simple hand tools and supplies.

Supplies Needed:
Crushed stone or gravel
Large landscaping rocks (available at a landscaping store)

Tools needed:
A shovel
Wooden stake
String
Level
Can of spray paint
Hand tamper
Tarp
Wheelbarrow
Small wood board

Before starting this or any construction project be sure to check your local building and fire codes.

The first thing to do is find a spot where the outdoor fireplace will look great! Choose a flat level area of your yard. Once you’ve found the perfect spot, mark the center of the fire pit with the wooden stake.

Attach a 3 foot long piece of string to the stake and then use it as a compass to draw out a 3 foot diameter pit. You’ll use the spray paint to mark the edges.

Once the layout is complete, grab the shovel and start digging! You want a 3 foot diameter pit roughly 2 feet deep. A great way to reduce clean up afterwards is to put the dirt onto a tarp then use the wheelbarrow to move it all out.

Once you’ve excavated the pit, pour a 6 inch deep layer of crushed stone or gravel into it.

Next you’ll want to level that gravel out so grab the wooden board and start raking it across the gravel to form a nice even surface. You can check it by placing the level on top of the plank.

Once it’s good and level grab the hand tamper and gently tamp down the gravel till it’s compacted. Check your level again and add more gravel to any low spots.

The only thing left to do now is to place the landscape stones around the border of the pit.

Grab your larger landscape rocks and place them side by side along the outside edge of the outdoor fireplace. A good tip is to dig a slight hole for each rock. That way you don’t have to worry about it rolling into the pit. A single layer of large landscape rocks is all you need. But if you want to get even more elaborate you can add another layer of smaller rocks on top of the first. Just be sure that they fit securely.

If you want to take things to the next level, you also have the option of creating an inside wall in the pit out of bricks of slabs of slate that are standing on end and tapped in to create a wall around the pit.

All that’s left to do now is clean up all that dirt! Since you placed it all on the tarp shoveling it back into the wheelbarrow won’t take much time at all.

Congratulations on your new outdoor fireplace. All that’s left to do now is put in some wood, grab some hot dogs and marshmallows, gather family and friends and enjoy!

It’s also possible to buy a copper pit in a bigger width. A 40 inch fire pit could be comparable to a campfire, just less dangerous. Everyone can take a seat round the fireplace and spend quality time with each other. You might even sing campfire songs. The new firepit gives you the sense of outdoor camping deep within the woods without having to leave the comfort your backyard. You can also purchase smaller sizes of approximately 35 inches.

No matter what size you decide on, you’ll be able to enjoy your backyard fireplace for a long time. The copper fire pits are your best option because of the durability of copper. Elevate Your Relationships and Your Backyard With an Outdoor Fire Pit

Outdoor fire pits are quickly becoming the gathering spot for family and friends on patios, decks and other backyard areas. They also are heating up at a variety of other social gathering places, such as taverns, restaurants, and hotels. In addition to being a great way to stay warm and have fun, outdoor fire pits are perfect when you’re looking for that feel of unwinding around a campfire with someone you like being with, and doing it any day you want in the comfort of your own backyard or apartment deck.

Outdoor fire pits have many more uses and benefits than what you may think. The quality of human interaction definitely magnifies. There is something about the warm glow of a fire that attracts and relaxes people. Truly, it creates a whole different dimension to your favorite outdoor space.

With a well-made fire pit, you don’t have to close off your backyard, patio or deck and stay indoors during the winter. Gathering for warmth around a healthy fire outside on a winter evening is a unique experience all of its own.

You can use wood burning fire pits for cooking. Not only is this fun and something different to do, it may prove quite beneficial during power outages and other situations when the stove and microwave can’t be used.

Portable outdoor fire pits are versatile and specifically designed for small, easily controllable fires that you can enjoy wherever you want. At the same time, they add a luxurious element to your outdoor style.

Sitting next to my outdoor fire pit works best for me under a crisp, starry night after a hectic and stressful day. Losing myself in the mystery of the dancing flames, the crackling and popping sounds of ashes launched into the night, and the unaffected smell of burning firewood drenched in fresh, cool air, is transporting and never gets old.

Of course, capturing and repeating this kind of experience requires the right kind of outdoor fire pit, one that enhances its setting and meets your particular needs and preferences. Make sure you consider the many options available for outdoor fire pits. They vary a lot in size, style, and function, and remember that quality matters.

A variety of materials are used in the manufacture of portable fire pits, including: wrought iron, cast iron, copper, stainless steel, aluminum, and ceramic. Some gorgeous custom made fire pits are made from concrete, marble and slate, as well as other select materials. The kind of material used can influence the functionality, durability, and style of the fire pit.

Although there are many shapes, sizes, and names given to outdoor fire pits, most are fueled in one of three ways: wood, propane, or natural gas. The choice is one of preference, availability, and convenience.

For example, you should seriously consider natural gas and propane if you live in a place where wood burning is restricted, or where wood is not easily available. If you already have natural gas lines installed, there are reasons why natural gas may be the better choice.

On the other hand, wood burning fire pits are very popular for a number of reasons, including the wood burning fragrance, cooking, and the joy of chopping and stacking firewood and building a campfire. In other words, there are a few things you need to think through before buying your outdoor fire pit.

Talking about buying, price certainly matters, but be careful. The most cheaply priced outdoor fire pits may not be the best buy. If you look, you may find something that looks nice for under $100, but you may also see rust and other deterioration after only a few weeks. Remember, outdoor fire pits sit out in the weather.

On the other hand, some custom built portable fire pits cost more than $1,000. For those who have the means, this works, because they appreciate and want the kind of material and craftsmanship that go into those models.

Generally speaking, you can find quality portable outdoor fire pits in a large variety of shapes and styles for $200 to $600. They truly are the perfect investment for people who want an affordable, functional, low maintenance outside fireplace without the cost, space requirement, and numerous restrictions of a solid stone fireplace structure.

As a natural gravitation point where we like to congregate, keep warm, roast marshmallows, and relax, an outdoor fire pit is a creative, transforming addition to any family and place where folks gather. If you’re developing your backyard into a haven for fun, relaxation and escape, a quality outdoor fire pit is essential.

Patio Fire Pits Heat Up Your Summer Nights

You may always be looking for ways to dress up your backyard so as to make it more appealing. And, if you are like most of us, you probably have a list of ideas that are only limited by the potential expense that they present. Well, if you are looking for the biggest bang for your backyard buck, you should take a serious look at patio fire pits.

Yes, you may have the dream of installing an elaborate backyard kitchen with a massive brick or stone fireplace to go along with it. But if you don’t have the deep pockets to pull that off, you ought to consider something a little smaller in scale, but no less appealing. And, that is where the benefit of patio fire pits come into play.

The beauty of a feature like this is that you can place it in such a way as to allow for future expansion if you find yourself in a position to do so at a later date. But while you are on a limited budget, you may as well maximize the comfort level of your patio by incorporating a professionally built fire pit.

And speaking of professionally done, that is not to suggest that you need to hire a contractor to do the job for you. Certainly you can go that route if you so choose, but if you are reasonably handy, you can take on the DIY project on your own. In most major cities at most home improvement centers you can readily find easy to assemble fire pit kits that will fit nicely onto your patio or other designated area in your backyard.

The types of packages that you can pick up vary and you should choose one according to your ability and skill level as a handy person. For the most part, what you are getting with a kit is a set of “how to” instructions along with a detailed list of the needed materials. As with most home improvement projects, attention to detail and patience are the keys.

You should also be comforted by the knowledge that your choice of materials is wide open. Brick, faux brick, stone, cement block — these are just a few of the many materials with which you can build your patio fire pit.

As was previously mentioned, you can hire a professional if you deem the project to be beyond your expertise. Due to the fairly small size of project, you should be able to find a contractor or even qualified handyman to take the project from start to finish without it costing you an arm and a leg.

However you get it done, you’ll be thrilled with your fire pit — that, you can rest assured. You will find that you will have created an additional open air living room that will be a drawing card for family and friends alike. Invest just a little time, money and effort now so that you can enjoy countless hours gazing at the flickering flames or up at the stars in the comfort of your own backyard.
