Adding a Backyard Deck to Extend Your Living Space

Your backyard can be an extension of your living space for entertaining family and friends while adding to the value of your home. First you need to consider a few things like budget, architecture of your home, landscape, family needs and your lifestyle. If you are on a tight budget then you can do this in steps while taking into consideration what the completed project will be.

You will then want to check with your local building department what their requirements are like easements or restrictions. Before construction starts it is always good to have your local utility companies mark any underground utilities. A good deck contractor will do this.

A good starting base would be a deck. Will this be a wood deck ( pressure treated pine, cedar, redwood) that will require maintenance from time to time like a good wood preservative or will it be an exotic hard wood or composite deck material that requires less attention? Will it be constructed with screws or nails? Check with your supplier to make sure that you get the best fasteners for you application if doing this yourself.

You can make this an outdoor living room with a fireplace or fire pit with a outdoor kitchen complete with a sink with running water, built in gas grill and refrigerator or just a deck with a portable gas or charcoal grill.

Consider shading this with a pergola or getting a little more protection from the rain with a shingled roof over the area and maybe install a set of french doors linking the indoors out to your new backyard paradise.

Improving Your Backyard Patio? Several Creative Ideas

Have you spent weeks acquiring the right look for the inside of your house? Now you can finally focus on the outside. Maybe you plan to begin with a new paint job, but what sorts of exterior accents will you incorporate into the overall look of your yard? Will you spread lounge chairs around the back yard or invest in a nice set of patio furniture for the deck? Have you considered a gazebo or an elaborate flower garden complete with rose bushes and trellises? How big your backyard is can determine what you are able to accomplish in it. If you are limited, you should look for decor that enhances the size.

There are so many possibilities for exterior accents, ranging from small accents to hang on the outside of the house to bigger, more costly decor such as a nice, relaxing set of patio furniture. You can choose to accent a small section of the front or back yard, or go for an overhaul on the entire lawn area. Exterior accents can be the fence posts you choose or the mailbox that will hold your mail each day. You can line your sidewalk with solar lights or paint your garden with bright, gazing balls. Possibilities abound if you put a little thought into planning.

Tips For Building Your Own Backyard Fire Pits

Backyard fire pits impart a fairy tale charm to any home. If space constrains does not allow you the luxury of an outdoor pit, you can opt for the handy option of chimenea pits. These portable pit designs are well suited for all types of landscapes including desert, woods or the beach. If you want to roast chicken, you can also incorporate a rotisserie bar and an ash pan. These pits work on both charcoal and wood.

However there are some Patio fire pits that use natural gas. These pits would always be permanent, built-in fire pits that are connected to your home’s natural gas lines. If propane gas is being used, a semi-portable tank can be integrated into the structure.

chimenea fire are available in various shapes and designs. Just like indoor fireplaces, a gas fire pit forms flames above concrete or ceramic logs and are ideal for those cities where wood fire ban is in place.

While setting up backyard pits, make sure that you have enough space to move around. It should be far away from fences and garden plants and should have enough space to sit around without the risk of getting too close to the flames. The pit should be set up in such a way that the wind will not blow smoke all over. It is better to use only seasoned firewood as it ensures complete combustion with no smoke.

Design Your Backyard Around a Fire Pit

Family and friends will gravitate to your backyard when you add a fire pit to your patio. The friendly warmth and glow of a burning fire has been bringing people together for centuries and continues to do so today. You can purchase a fire pit that will go with any backyard design, from basic to sophisticated, and in styles that range from a classic round bowl to tables with fire pits in the center. When it comes to fire pits, there are plenty of choices so which is best for you?

Your first decision will be to have a permanent or portable model. A permanent fire pit is built in and usually burns natural gas from your home. This type often looks more like a fireplace but it makes a statement about your desire to be outdoors in the evening. Portable fire pits dominate the market place, and for the obvious reason – they can be moved. A portable unit allows you to move the fire pit around your backyard or even take it with you to the beach, camping or tailgating. The portable models come in many shapes, materials and sizes so you are sure to find one that will fit the design of your backyard area.

Your second decision will center around the fuel you will use in your fire pit. Wood burning models, continue to be the most popular, but many communities have now placed bans on wood burning so check your local ordinances first. Wood burning fire pits also require more open space around them, so make sure you have an area that is large enough. But for a true campfire experience there is nothing like the smell of burning logs and the crackle of a wood fire. Propane fire pits are becoming more popular every day. They offer easy on and off, leave no ashes to clean up, can be used in more locations and are environmentally friendly. A propane fire pit can easily be designed into a table which makes them even more functional.

How to Buy a Backyard Canopy

Before you buy a backyard canopy for your home, there are a few things that you should consider. First you need to determine what you goal is before you make a purchase. Do you need to be able to take it on the road with you, or will you be happy with a stationary or permanent model that generally takes up a lot of space. Those are just a few points to consider, and hopefully I will be able to help you make an informed choice.

Portability

Do you like to tailgate? I have been tailgating and going to football games at my alma mater for the last several years. For me, one of the most important features in a backyard canopy is the ability to take it on the road. Not only do I want to be able to enjoy the lawn and trees in my backyard, I need to have the flexibility to load it up in the truck, hit the road and set it up in just a few minutes.

This type of flexibility can be found in a “pop up” canopy. These models generally come in three different parts for easy assembly and portability. You will have the “canvas” portion, the base and a bag that usually has wheels.

Permanently Installed Canopies and Gazebos

When most people think of a permanent model, they usually think of gazebos. Gazebos are the perfect choice for people that are looking for a permanent fixture in their backyard. They are often accented and decorated with string lighting, furniture and even fireplaces. Some people actually put lamps and living room style furniture under them to give a fireside ambiance that this type of canopy can provide.

Affordability

Affordability is probably the most important point to consider for the consumer these days. The sky is literally the limit for some of the gazebo models. They can be found for well over a thousand dollars. That is just too much for me to swallow. If you prefer a permanently installed gazebo in your backyard, you should have no problem finding a very high quality model for somewhere around three hundred dollars. If a portable canopy meets your needs, you should be able to find a model under two hundred dollars that will last you for years.

Okay, here is the piece of advice that will save you the most money when you decide to make your purchase. Wait until after the peak season to buy your canopy. I have seen high quality portable models go for half off their original pricing during the off season. Top quality gazebos can be found at deep discounts as well during the right time of year. There you have it, the best advice on how to buy a backyard canopy is simply to make your purchase out of season. It’s as easy as that.

Backyard canopy takes a closer look at the different features and options that you should consider before buying an canopy or gazebo for your backyard. Visit http://backyard-canopy.com and see for yourself how to choose a canopy or gazebo that you can be proud of.

Firepit & Outdoor Fireplace Ideas

Are you interested in an outdoor firepit? An outdoor fireplace can be an amazing attraction on your patio, or use anywhere in the yawn. Use it like a campfire in your own backyard! Most firepits can easily be transported anywhere, so you can take on a camping trip or to a friends place if you desire. An outdoor fireplace is like sitting around the campfire, everyone will enjoy gathering around the fire and some will sure want to roast marsh mellows.

There are so many types of firepits on the market today. Take the time to shop around, you may find more and more, and may have a hard time deciding which type to choose. Some common styles are bowl, square, and rounded cylinder. Combine with screened, covered or open style. They are also made from stainless steel, porcelain, slate, iron, or cast aluminum, and with different designs and colors.

Firepits can also provide beauty and warmth. Many have several types of cooking racks, some are designed well for artificial logs. Some are large to hold even the big logs you have to burn and there are sure small pits for those smaller patio areas for a nice small fire.

An example of an affordable porcelain screened type is the Heatwave from Landmann USA. It costs about 60 dollars and is a great starter outdoor fireplace. It is portable with large wheels and has a cover with screen door.

Getting Married in Your Own Backyard

We’ve all heard it said: There is no place like home. When you get engaged and start looking for the perfect place to hold your wedding, you may very well find yourself agreeing with that sentiment. While it is not always easy, getting married in your own home can make your wedding feel even more special.

Weddings at home come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes the event is held at the home of the bride and groom, although more frequently the bride’s parents play host to the nuptials. There are many things to consider, and much to plan for. So much, in fact, that one of the best things you can do for yourself is to hire a wedding coordinator.

When you are having a wedding at a private home rather than a commercial space, one of your first steps is to realistically determine how many guests you can accommodate. Remember, too, that you cannot count on the weather, so you will need to be able to provide a sheltered space if need be. This can be a tent in the backyard if you have enough property, or seating in your parents’ living room. Just be sure that you can fit everyone in before sending out the invitations!

Often there is some feature of your home that you have always loved, and it can be nice to make that a focal point of your wedding ceremony. If there is a huge old oak tree in the yard, there would be nothing better than to exchange your vows in front of it. Perhaps you have always admired your mother’s breathtaking garden – then take your walk down the aisle through a flower filled path.

Indoor weddings can also be beautifully done in the colder months or if a large backyard is not available. One of the loveliest weddings that I ever attended was on a February afternoon. The bride descended the stairs from the second floor to meet her groom in front of the fireplace in her parents’ living room. The happy couples exchanged their heartfelt vows in front of thirty guests sipping Champagne. The ceremony was followed by a dinner reception at a private room in a country club, which made everything much easier on the bride’s parents.

A wedding in your home can really be as formal or casual as you like, but it should in some way suit the location. For this reason, many weddings that take place in private homes are not extremely formal. At the wedding described above, the bride wore a simple silk A-line gown with tasteful pearl bridal jewelry, which was just right for the home. Unless you are getting married in a mansion, wearing a gown with a full cathedral length train and ropes and ropes of pearl bridal jewelry would be out of proportion. Keep your look pretty and festive, but always appropriate to your setting.

A good wedding planner will be able to walk you through all of the other specifics of planning a wedding at your house. You will need to arrange for everything from rentals to parking to town permits, so it is good to get the process started as early as possible. Being married in your own home will likely mean a bit more work, but there is not a bride who does it who would have rather have had her wedding anyplace else.

Ask Bridget for advice in areas of jewelry or weddings. She writes numerous articles providing information for the customers of Silverland Jewelry.com. Pearl bridal jewelry will always look tasteful and stylish.

Swimming Pools – Enjoy Your Own Backyard Resort

With the weather warming up, what a great time to drift on a raft in a backyard swimming pool. There is no better place to getaway from life’s little stresses than your own backyard. Travel time is minimal and the stay is free!

With so many new swimming pool products and landscape ideas available, there is no reason you can’t create that special retreat at your own home. There are an array of new pool decking materials available, new filtration systems (salt water is in), waterfalls cascading into the pool and outdoor living rooms are all the rage! It is not just a pool anymore; it is your own backyard luxury resort.

Below are some of the new trends we have been seeing in swimming pool design and landscaping.

Swimming Pool Design – The best place to start with any major project is with a comprehensive design. Whether you plan to do things in stages or all at once, you will want to be certain you receive a complete design to ensure the entire yard blends together. Start by determining a few key points for the design – the size and shape of the swimming pool, how you intend to use the space (relaxation, exercise, sports) and any special design elements you would like incorporate that suit your lifestyle. Your imagination is your only limitation (well and possibly your budget).

Swimming Pool Decks – The new trend in pool decking is to throw out the stark white concrete and use more exciting, natural pool decking products. You can easily give an old pool new life by changing the decking. We are seeing homeowners use more natural products – brick pavers, blue stone, and travertine – that blend in with their overall landscaping and add a little bit of color to their pool.

Total Outdoor Living Spaces – The new rage in landscaping is to create outdoor living rooms, and this includes swimming pools. Incorporating a gourmet kitchen, outdoor fireplace or cabanas and pool houses into your pool area can provide a perfect place to gather and entertain friends and family.

Water Features – Whether it is water cascading from a rock waterfall or an intricate grotto located behind the falls, the new trend for pools is to add the relaxing element of falling water. Customers are incorporating water features into their pools – fountains that shoot bursts of water through the air, elaborate cascades that drop a sheet of water into the pool and intricate waterslides for the kids (and you too). You can create your own natural wonder of the world.

Salt Water Pools – The new trend in pool filtration systems is salt! Benefits of this natural cleaning process include: no chlorine smell, no red eyes, reduced cost (your just buying salt), and no pool “shocking” with chemicals. Talk to your local pool company to learn more about how the salt filtration system works.

Swimming Pool Landscaping – Remember to add color and beauty to your swimming pools landscape. Bring in lush plantings around the pool deck to soften the hardscape and a few evergreens to add some privacy. Also think about shade elements; will you be using carefully planted trees, umbrellas or awnings.

Swimming Pool Lighting – Don’t forget the lighting, you may want to enjoy your pool well into the evening. You can use a mix of landscape lighting for pathways, trees and gardens, use fountain lights in the pool and add a few Tiki torches for the island resort experience. You can set any mood with the right lighting!

You better get your backyard patio all cleaned up and ready for summer barbecues and outdoor family gatherings. It isn’t difficult at all to get your backyard in party condition. All it takes is a few simple decorative touches such as new patio furniture or adding outdoor soapstone stoves to cook on.

Decorating your outdoor patio is fairly easy. The most difficult part is deciding on just one idea from the thousands of different ways to liven it up. Some people choose to transform their patio into a cooler, pleasant looking one while not spending that much money to do so. All you need is a little imagination in coming up with a design and theme. Most do this with patio furniture from umbrellas to shelter you from the sun or rain to soapstone countertops to set your summer drinks on.

The first step is to invest in some really good quality patio furniture. You need somewhere for everyone to gather, after all. Patio furniture can be found in a wide range of materials such as plastic, wood, wicker, resin, aluminum, chaises, metals and glass. You’ll want outdoor furniture that is built to withstand the outdoors too. Make sure it is both water and sunlight resistant.

One of the most popular types of patio furniture is the lounge chairs. These classic chairs never go out of style. These chairs make us feel like we are floating on air and are sold in a variety of eye catching colors. No outdoor deck or backyard is complete without at least one lounge chair. We have a pair set up next to our fireplace made of soapstone for those cool spring nights.

Among the different types of furniture for the outdoors, resin furniture is the hardiest and requires the least amount of maintenance and care. We use two resin chairs next to a soapstone counter as a place to eat lunch. If your resin chair is looking a little dirty, simply spray it clean with some water and let it dry off. Most scuff marks can be removed using a gentle abrasive.

If your furniture is hard to sit in, try adding a cushion to your chairs. Try to keep a storage place in mind when you’re done with these cushions. We try to keep ours in a space underneath our soapstone countertops. This is a cool, dry place which helps limit the amount of cleaning needed for them.

Anne has worked on many home improvement projects with soapstone. Her specialties are redesigning ordinary kitchens into the extraordinary using soapstone stoves [http://www.doradosoapstone.com/_Fireplaces/index.htm] or soapstone countertops.

Backyard Camping Trip

Are your kids begging you to take them camping, but you just can’t find the time to take them on a camping trip? Or would you like to introduce your kids to the fun of camping for the first time, but aren’t sure if they will enjoy it, or might get scared? Either way, camping out in your backyard will be a fun way to spend the evening and night with your kids.

Get the kids involved in setting up camp in your backyard. Have them help you set up the tent. Put them in charge of getting their sleeping bags, flashlights and anything else they may need into the tent. If it’s an option for you, you may even want to make a campfire in your backyard. Check with your fire department before hand if this is an option in your area. If not, just dig out the charcoal or gas grill. Grill some hotdogs and make some foil backed potatoes for dinner, and of course you’ll need some s’mores for desert. If you are roasting the marshmallows over your grill, put some aluminum foil over the grate to keep the melting marshmallow from dripping onto your grill.

Don’t have a tent, or even a backyard for that matter? That’s no reason not to camp out. Just spread out your sleeping bags, or even just some blanket in the living room. Turn off the TV, radio and video games. If you have a fireplace, build a fire. Otherwise, order some pizza and pop some popcorn and you can even make s’mores in the microwave.

No matter where you decide to have your close to home camping trip, take some time to sit together and talk. Telling stories, whether a campfire is involved or not, is always fun. Your kids’ imagination in creating new stories may surprise you. Don’t forget to tell some handed down family tales.
