Cold and the outdoors can still be enjoyable with the help of an outdoor fireplace. It is a great addition to a backyard or patio. Like the indoor fireplace, it contains a firebox and a chimney to keep the smoke overhead. The difference lies in the purpose. Indoor fireplaces are built to keep the house warm while the real outdoor fireplace is made for cooking. Warmth is only secondary although there are outdoor fireplaces built to generate heat while entertaining outdoors.
Some outdoor fireplaces are designed to serve as ovens that allows the users to make meals like casserole and pizza.
Also like the indoor fireplaces, they come in different types such as gas, wood, pellet coal or propane operated fireplace. It has the same features as the indoor ones. The material may vary from stone, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, copper, granite, marble or mosaic tile. Maintenance of outdoor fireplaces is not very intensive but has to be done regularly to keep it working at its best and prevent damage from the elements.
Aside from the usual designs, there are other outdoor fireplaces that never fails to attract attention of guests. These are the chiminea, the fire bowls and fire pits.
The chiminea is an outdoor fireplace are traditional Mexican fireplaces where the lower part is bowl shaped and a narrower chimney top. These have been in use in Mexico for centuries and are designed for cooking. The bowl shaped bottom makes it easier for air to circulate and the overhead chimney keeps smoke and ashes away from the people sitting around it. The traditional chiminea is made of clay or metal, which can be aluminum or cast iron. Clay chimineas are also called terracotta fireplaces and are much cheaper compared to metal ones and easily generate heat but they are more prone to damage by the elements. Cracks tend to appear especially when often exposed to moisture.
Firebowls and fire pits are another heating idea for the outdoors. Their sizes and depths varies and the material may be made of metal such as copper, aged bronze or stainless steel. Some are made of stones like slate, marble or granite. There are also decorative fire bowls and fire pits that are decked with decorative tiles or elegant scrolls to give it a chic look. Sometimes fire pits and fire bowls act as grill for outdoor cooking. Most come with a wire mesh to prevent sparks from jumping out and starting accidental fires.
The last two types use wood for fuel as actual cooking is being done. But whatever type you want for your outdoors, make sure that it is safe to use especially if you have a wooden deck. If you install an outdoor fireplace make sure it is on a fireproof area such as one with a surface made of brick, stone, dirt or concrete. Also check with the laws of your municipalities. Some state prevent certain type of outdoor fireplaces while other permit those that meet certain specifications.
