We’ve all heard it said: There is no place like home. When you get engaged and start looking for the perfect place to hold your wedding, you may very well find yourself agreeing with that sentiment. While it is not always easy, getting married in your own home can make your wedding feel even more special.
Weddings at home come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes the event is held at the home of the bride and groom, although more frequently the bride’s parents play host to the nuptials. There are many things to consider, and much to plan for. So much, in fact, that one of the best things you can do for yourself is to hire a wedding coordinator.
When you are having a wedding at a private home rather than a commercial space, one of your first steps is to realistically determine how many guests you can accommodate. Remember, too, that you cannot count on the weather, so you will need to be able to provide a sheltered space if need be. This can be a tent in the backyard if you have enough property, or seating in your parents’ living room. Just be sure that you can fit everyone in before sending out the invitations!
Often there is some feature of your home that you have always loved, and it can be nice to make that a focal point of your wedding ceremony. If there is a huge old oak tree in the yard, there would be nothing better than to exchange your vows in front of it. Perhaps you have always admired your mother’s breathtaking garden – then take your walk down the aisle through a flower filled path.
Indoor weddings can also be beautifully done in the colder months or if a large backyard is not available. One of the loveliest weddings that I ever attended was on a February afternoon. The bride descended the stairs from the second floor to meet her groom in front of the fireplace in her parents’ living room. The happy couples exchanged their heartfelt vows in front of thirty guests sipping Champagne. The ceremony was followed by a dinner reception at a private room in a country club, which made everything much easier on the bride’s parents.
A wedding in your home can really be as formal or casual as you like, but it should in some way suit the location. For this reason, many weddings that take place in private homes are not extremely formal. At the wedding described above, the bride wore a simple silk A-line gown with tasteful pearl bridal jewelry, which was just right for the home. Unless you are getting married in a mansion, wearing a gown with a full cathedral length train and ropes and ropes of pearl bridal jewelry would be out of proportion. Keep your look pretty and festive, but always appropriate to your setting.
A good wedding planner will be able to walk you through all of the other specifics of planning a wedding at your house. You will need to arrange for everything from rentals to parking to town permits, so it is good to get the process started as early as possible. Being married in your own home will likely mean a bit more work, but there is not a bride who does it who would have rather have had her wedding anyplace else.
